Scholarship Application Process

OBJECTIVE

The scholarship is designed to give the successful applicant the opportunity to study all aspects of racecourse management at a global level. The experience gained from this scholarship will expand the successful applicant’s horizons, both professionally and personally, as they will be exposed to different management styles, operational environments, climatic conditions, cultures and lifestyle.


The scholarship offers the opportunity for aspiring Australian racecourse managers to shape the future of their careers, develop ongoing working relationships and participate in racing culture on the global stage. Scholarship winners will be perceived as upcoming leaders in the racecourse management profession and will act as role models for their peers.

SELECTION CRITERIA

The applicant must:

  1. Be employed full time and working on the race track at an Australian racecourse or a Principal Racing Authority (PRA) which is a member of the Australian Racecourse Managers Association (ARMA).
  2. Have a minimum of 3 years employment experience at a racecourse(s).
  3. Submit a written application including career history and future career plans.
  4. Display excellent communication skills.
  5. Submit to a full medical examination.
  6. Provide a current police clearance certificate.
  7. Have knowledge of occupational health and safety requirements and demonstrate safety awareness.
  8. Have passion for the industry and a drive for professionalism.
  9. Preferably have qualifications in the field of sports turf management or other relevant qualification.
  10. Attend a formal interview if selected as a short listed candidate, based on the application.


  

The applicant’s employer is required to:

  1. Endorse this application for the Steriline Racing & ARMA scholarship and by so doing agrees to ensure the candidate is available to undertake the scholarship and be available for the entire scholarship period. 
  2. Submit a reference report to the selection panel in support of the applicant.
  3. Provide adequate travel insurance for the employee for the duration of the scholarship program.

REQUIREMENTS OF THE APPLICANT

  1. Attend any meetings or orientation courses held by ARMA and the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC).
  2. Abide by all program rules of your host, the HKJC.
  3. Be an active participant in your exchange.
  4. Accept the supervision of the HKJC.
  5. Ask questions of your host, the HKJC.
  6. After returning to Australia, the recipient will be expected to prepare a report for ARMA and Steriline Racing to be publicised through industry media and present a 20 minute report at the next annual ARMA conference including PowerPoint or similar presentation. These reports should provide a detailed summary of the personal and professional experience gained from the scholarship, as well as the benefits to the recipient’s Club and the racing industry. 
  7. Upon returning to Australia the scholarship winner will be expected to share the experience with others in the racecourse management sector.

PERSONAL QUALITIES TO BE SELECTED

Weighting and Criteria


30% - Be a person who shows integrity, professionalism, leadership, passion for the industry, and qualities to be a senior Racecourse Manager.


15% - Be able to act, whilst overseas, as an ambassador for Australia, ARMA, Steriline Racing and for his or her respective race club.


15% - Be open-minded to new experiences and demonstrate a flexible approach and ability to report.


20% - Accept responsibility and demonstrate maturity for the entire scholarship period.


20% - Demonstrate an ability to be respectful and understanding of the host country’s culture.
